Semifinal sweep

November 20, 2008 3:21 PM

By Christine Jinbo

Summer has finally turned to fall in California and the cool crisp night air hustled fans into the haven of a gym filled with raucous color clad fans for the CIF playoffs.

Mira Costa (Manhattan Beach), wearing playoff black and green uniforms, traveled to Los Alamitos for the semifinal match of the CIF Div I-AA Southern Section playoffs.  The final, now set with teams that each swept to their semifinal victories over worthy opponents.   Last night, Mira Costa topped Los Alamitos, 25-17, 25-14, 25-16 in little over an hour.

The Mustangs expected and prepared for a battle in a hostile gymnasium.  The Griffin crowd outnumbered the Costa crowd three to one in numbers.  Maybe, like the Griffin team, the crowd had little to get excited about with the exception of intermittent Jane Croson hammers.  Croson finished the night with 13 kills on 24 attempts.  In comparison, Falyn Fonoimoana of Mira Costa finished with 14 kills on 33 attempts, 12 digs, one block and two aces.

The team, once called young, inexperienced and lacking ball control (from this author's very own words), appeared poised, seasoned, and in command of its game. The young team grew up, it could have been the change in wardrobe, a change in lineup, a change in attitude, but most likely it was a progression Coach Lisa Arce planned all along.

Nothing like eating your own words, so when asked what the transformation was due to, Head Coach Lisa Arce responded, "We prepared in practice and raised our level of play."

Yep, still chewing...

By all accounts, this is a "rebuilding year for the Mustangs: fourth at the pre-season Durango Classic Tournament (Las Vegas, Nev.), second at Torrey Pines California Challenge Tournament and second at Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions.  Even the best of seasons looks "less than compared to the perfect 37-0 team from 2007.

It was Costa's night and the Griffins could not buy a break.   The game spun out of control for the Griffins.  Dependable players wore expressions of exasperation mirrored on Head Coach Dave Huber's face.

"We are traditionally a slow starting team, but we went up 13-9 in game one, so nerves did not seem to be a factor." Huber continued, "When we got down, we tried to do things we don't normally do. We got back on our heels trying to be perfect."

ESPN RISE FAB 50 girls volleyball

November 19, 2008 5:20 PM

By Christine Jinbo

Teams from California, Illinois and Texas battled in their perspective playoff races.  The California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) playoffs have all gone according to seed, without major upsets in the top divisions, but not all state races were that simple.

In the CIF Div. II Central Coast Section, ESPN RISE ranked No. 1 Archbishop Mitty (San Jose) received a bye, then defeated Presentation (San Jose), 25-14, 25-15, 25-22.  The Monarchs will face Palo Alto on Wednesday night.

 Natalie Hamill
 Leonard Xu/ESPN RISE
Santa Margarita's Natalie Hamill sets the table for the aggressive offense that just took down No. 11 Long Beach Wilson.
Similarly, in the CIF Div. I San Diego Section, No. 2 La Costa Canyon (Carlsbad) has not let a team score more than 16 points as it defeated El Camino, 25-7, 25-9, 25-7 and Fallbrook, 25-15, 25-8, 25-16.  The Mavericks will face Poway next and could find themselves in the final against Avocado League rival, No. 41 Torrey Pines.

The CIF Div. I-AA Southern Section showed a great quarterfinal round, after some postponements due to the wildfires.  No. 7 Mira Costa (Manhattan Beach) defeated No. 29 Orange Lutheran (Orange), 25-19, 25-21, 22-25, 29-27, No. 22 Los Alamitos defeated No. 27 Thousand Oaks, 25-22, 29-27, 21-25, 21-25, 15-12, and No. 15 Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita) defeated Lakewood, 25-22, 25-16, 18-25, 26-24.  No. 11 Long Beach Wilson was the only school to sweep its opponent in the quarterfinals, Newport Harbor, 26-24, 25-23, 25-12.

In the Southern Section, Div. I-A, No. 19 Dos Pueblos (Goleta), No. 30 Marymount (Los Angeles), No. 43 Santa Barbara and unranked Laguna Beach advanced.  No. 26 Redlands East Valley (Redlands) is set to play Bishop Montgomery (Torrance) in the semifinals of Div. II-AA.

Unlike the CIF, the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) State Tournament had upsets galore as previously ranked No. 16 Benet Academy (Lisle) defeated No. 5 Mother McAuley (Chicago), in a semifinal match.  ESPN RISE Athlete of the Week Kelly Griffin, had a match high 11 kills, but was the only player in double digits for the Mighty Macs. Ariana Mankus, Natalie Patzin, Jessica Jendryk all recorded double digit kills for Benet Academy in the, 25-21, 20-25, 25-21 semifinal victory.

The Redwings, poised for a state championship, were stopped in their tracks by No. 9 St. Charles East in the final.  Ariana Mankus had a match high, 17 kills and nine digs, but no other Benet teammate recorded double digit kills.  Caroline Niski contributed a double double, 16 kills and 12 digs, for St. Charles East, as the Fighting Saints took their first IHSA State Championship since the four class system and second overall, 25-23, 22-25, 19-25.  Mother McAuley  placed third in the tournament.

No. 16 Joliet Catholic sustained three losses this season, to Benet Academy (a split series), McAuley, and Plant (Tampa, Fla.).  The Angels defeated Mater Dei (Breese) 25-19, 25-23 and Burlington Central, 25-19, 25-14 as they captured the Class 3A IHSA Championship. Annemarie Hickey topped the kill list for the Angels with ten. Stephanie Holthus had a match high 13 kills for Burlington Central.

The University Interscholastic League (UIL), which hosts the Texas State playoffs, witnessed top seeds that failed to advance. The upsets came when previously ranked No. 4 Reagan (San Antonio) was expected to meet 5A Region IV District 26 rival Churchill (San Antonio), but instead found itself in the Regional Final versus No. 30 Westlake (Austin).

Westlake, which bounced in and out of the rankings this year, hit its stride at the right time and defeated previously ranked No. 11 Churchill in the Regional Quarterfinals 21-25, 25-17, 25-23, 23-25, 15-11.  The Chaparrals continued their winning streak over San Antonio teams, with a five game miracle over No. 4 Reagan, 25-19, 22-25, 18-25, 25-19, 18-16.

As expected, No. 13 Clear Creek (Houston) and No. 6 Amarillo advanced through their regions to the State Tournament Qualifier.  No. 25 Lake Highlands advanced as well.

Again!

November 19, 2008 11:08 AM

By Christine Jinbo - From contributions from school representatives

ESPN RISE No. 11 Wilson (Long Beach, Calif.), the only team that swept its match in the quarterfinals,

 Christina Berry
 Leonard Xu
Christina Berry reaches for a set, but how far can Santa Margarita reach in the CIF playoffs?
had the favor returned by No. 15 Santa Margarita Catholic High School (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) in the semifinals of the Div. I-AA CIF Southern Section playoffs.  The Eagles, who have repeatedly knocked off top teams this season including former No. 1 La Costa Canyon (Carlsbad), proved their dominance in three games over Wilson, 25-23, 25-23, 25-23.

Kylie Hargreaves and Kenna Crouse each had stellar games, both controlled the net and supplied the firepower for the Eagles. Crouse sealed the net and contributed key blocks.   Lindsay Mortenson performed well at the net with several blocks and touches on kill attempts to slow Wilson's
attack for the tenacious Eagle defense.  Mortenson went on the offensive with her serve and kept Wilson off balance and out of its attack mode.

The match featured several incredibly long rallies as both teams exhibited strong defense and refused to let the ball drop on either side.  At the end of several points the team that lost the point would have three or four girls on the floor in an attempt to keep the rally alive.  In the words from a fan at the match,

"Incredible."

From the first point of the first game to the last point of the third game both sides exhibited an extremely high level of intensity.  Each of the three games could have gone either way, with Santa Margarita finishing just a little bit stronger in each game.  Neither team had more than a five point lead in the match, with the exception of the second game when Wilson extended the lead to seven.

Picture coming soon.

ESPN RISE Athlete of the Week

November 17, 2008 5:59 PM

By Christine Jinbo

The ESPN RISE high school athletes of the week program honors five football players and ten non-football players each week for the fall season.  A panel of contributors from around the nation selects the honorees each week.

Courtesy of Cherry Creek High School
Baird waits to block at the net.
Our girls honoree for this week comes from the undefeated No. 20 Cherry Creek High School volleyball team (31-0) in Greenwood Village, Colo.  Carrie Baird, a 6-foot-1 outside hitter, was named MVP of the Colorado state tournament after recording a match-high 15 kills as the nationally-ranked Bruins remained undefeated and defeated Centennial League rival Grandview, 28-26, 25-11, 25-11.

The Bruin's senior four-year letter-winner, is accustomed to success and has a laundry list of accolades and accomplishments.  Besides being named the MVP and All Tournament Team member of Colorado State Volleyball Tournament this year, Baird was named Centennial League All Conference First Team 2006 and 2007, Offensive MVP 2007, and recorded the most career kills for Cherry Creek since 1984, with over 963.  She also competes for Front Range Volleyball Club, which last year, placed first at the Big South and fifth in the Open Division of the USA Junior Olympic Championship.

Athletic accolades do not complete Baird's resume though.  Baird maintains a 4.59 weighted grade point average and received the Varsity Academic Award in 2006, '07, and '08.  She participates in her school community as a member of Creek Connects, a mentoring group for incoming freshman and belongs to the Spanish Honor Society, a community service organization that aids Hispanic citizens.  Besides being a member of Creek Connects, Baird is also co-president of Ethnic Fest and a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Baird's favorite subject in school is Spanish and she told us about her love for language.

"I love learning new languages.  I have studied Spanish for seven years and hope to become fluent.  I also hope to start Chinese in college.  I love to travel and experience new cultures.  I hope to study abroad in Europe in college and play volleyball overseas while there."

Baird began to play volleyball when she was ten and gave up soccer to pursue it.

"My next-door neighbors introduced me into volleyball when I was ten years old.  I got bored with soccer and wanted to start a new sport," said Baird.

My neighbor played on the Cherry Creek high school team at the time and convinced me to play Bruins Rec volleyball for a year before I started club, she continued.

ESPN RISE caught up with Baird, before she traveled on a recruiting trip, to answer a few questions.

ESPNRISE.com started the sentence and Baird filled in the blank:

1) I play best when...  I am very focused and have done my pre-match sports visualization.  I know it sounds strange, but it really works!

2) If I were a coach I would... teach my players to believe in their ability to control a game by being consistent, taking advantage of the opposing teams' weaknesses, and playing to win!!

3) The best thing about Volleyball is... that each point is its own separate game.  If you always focus on winning the point in front of you, you can be successful in almost any situation, no matter the score.

4) Something most people don't know about me is... I love to sing and act-I am really good at imitating people. :)   I had to quit choir for volleyball two years ago, but if I did not play sports I would definitely be involved in choir and drama.

5) The topical issue that most interests me in the world is... eliminating terrorism and cultural/religious conflict between countries.

7) If I could have one superhuman power it would be... the ability to control time.

8) My most memorable Volleyball moment is... winning a gold medal at the Junior Olympics and finishing an undefeated season by winning the state tournament.

Fires threaten homes and playoffs

November 15, 2008 7:48 PM

By Christine Jinbo

Los Angeles, Calif. - Communities throughout Southern California battle blazes that rage out of control due to high winds.

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said power lines were down in places, and he asked residents to conserve power to help avoid possible blackouts.

The severe fires forced the closure of major freeways and forced thousands of residents to evacuate as Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger declared a state of emergency in Los Angeles.

Sylmar community battled fires, north of Downtown Los Angeles, which grew to 6,500 acres - more than 10 square miles - and was only 10 percent contained.

As many as 30 homes have already burned in a fire in Orange and Riverside counties, officials said.  The fires have burned homes in Yorba Linda, Corona and Anaheim Hills today and closed sections of the 91 and 57 freeways.

At least 40 homes in Yorba Linda  have burned, several homes were also burned in Corona. The blaze jumped the 91 Freeway and burned homes in Anaheim Hills.

So far, the quarterfinal Div. I CIF Southern Section match between Orange Lutheran (Orange) and Mira Costa (Manhattan Beach) has been postponed tentatively until Monday.  Reports have come in stating some families from Orange Lutheran, affected by the Orange/Riverside fires, have lost homes.

Athlete of the Week

November 15, 2008 6:34 PM

For this week's girls honoree, we take our second trip to Orange County where we honor a cheerful, humble young woman who talked mostly "team rather than "me. Of two things she has in common with several previous award winners is she can spike volleyballs!

By Harold Abend, Special to ESPN RISE Volleyball.

Note: Remember, we are looking for those student-athletes who had a standout performance in their sport from the previous week, but we also are looking for a balance between athletic achievement, academic work in the classroom, community service or overcoming adversity. Send nominations to mark@studentsports.com.

Kylie Hargreaves has two things in common with previous Girls State Athlete of the Week volleyball winners Kristina Graven of ESPNRISE High School Volleyball FAB 50 No. 1 Archbishop Mitty (San Jose), Lauren Corp of Orange Lutheran (Orange), Krista Vansant of Redlands East Valley and Kendall Polan of the La Costa Canyon (Carlsbad) team Kylie and her Eagles teammates knocked out of the FAB 50 top spot with a 2-1 (25-21, 15-25, 25-21) victory Nov. 1 in the finals of the Redondo Power Classic.

 ESPN RISE
 Kylie Hargreaves.
All four are dominant players and team leaders.

The other thing she has in common with them, besides competing in league against Corp, and knowing her as well as Vansant, whose father Robert Vansant is friends with her dad Guy Hargreaves, is Kylie is not a one-girl team.

In fact, in order to be where the Eagles have risen to, an eight spot jump to No. 15 in this week's FAB 50, takes more than one player to step up to the net.

Nowhere was that more apparent than at the Redondo Classic.

The power and depth of a surging, healthy Santa Margarita team was felt by La Costa Canyon, as well as current FAB 50 No. 27 Thousand Oaks, whom the Eagles defeated 3-2 (25-23, 25-21, 17-25, 22-25, 15-7) in the semifinals.

For her efforts, 5-foot-10 junior outside hitter Hargreaves was named tourney MVP, with teammates Natalie Hamill and Kenna Crouse joining her on the all-tournament team.

We aked her coach why Hargreaves was chosen MVP.

"Kylie is a big part of our team chemistry," Eagles Coach Crissy Chapman-Uhrig told CalHiSports.com. "Out of six rotations we have, Kylie and my setter Natalie are the only two players to play every rotation and that says a lot about her play. Plus, she's been dominant all season against top competition including everyone at Redondo."

The response by Chapman-Uhrig was to quesitons as why her player was MVP at Redondo and deserving of major awards, when the coach keeps no statistics.

"When I played, I got a lot of awards and sometimes it never made sense to me, because I grew up playing volleyball as a team sport," said Chapman-Uhrig, who was raised in Illinois and played volleyball of the University of Illinois before a stint with the US Pro Team based in Chicago.

"I don't keep any stats and never have. Through the years I'm trying to foster a team concept, and this year is a perfect example. We have a new set of stars every week. Plus the injuries haven't helped," said a very busy coach, mother and business partner.

Chapman-Uhrig, the Eagles' coach for four years, was the dean of students and a health and fitness teacher at Santa Margarita Catholic before going off on maternity leave for her 15-month-old son. She's currently seven-and-a-half months pregnant again with husband Jeff Uhrig, the Eagles' boys coach and her partner in a custom home business.

After graduating eight seniors and being plagued by injuries all season, the fact Hargreaves and her team are ranked in the FAB 50 is amazing.

"It's so crazy. After losing eight seniors nobody expected much from us," Chapman-Uhrig said. "Then with the injuries."

No injury was more of a blow than when Hargreaves missed 10 days after she got knocked unconscious in a second-round match at the Durango Tournament in Las Vegas in a 1-2 loss to Archbishop Mitty.

After Kylie went out at Durango, the Eagles (22-7) went 2-2 the remainder of the Classic.  They lost 1-2 to FAB 50 No. 7 Mira Costa (Manhattan Beach) and 1-2 to Kamehameha of Honolulu. They did beat last year's CIF Div. I state champion Lakewood 2-0, and pinned a 2-1 loss on El Dorado of Placentia.

Before Hargreaves return the Eagles suffered a 3-0 loss to Lakewood before competing in the Capistrano Valley Tournament and beginning Trinity League play. They won the league and are now in the CIF Southern Section Div. IAA playoffs.

Since she's been back, the team is 17-2 with losses only to Laguna Beach and a lone league loss, 1-3 to FAB 50 No. 29 Orange Lutheran and Corp, whom they split with on the season after posting a 3-0 victory.

Last week in the league-clinching 3-1 victory over Mater Dei (Santa Ana), Hargreaves was "dominant at the net and instrumental in the victory, according to Chapman-Uhrig.

After a first-round bye, the Eagles open playoff competition tonight as the second-seed in Div. IAA, and host Royal of Simi Valley, a 3-2 opening-round winner over Dana Hills of Dana Point.

"Right now the team goal and focus is getting to the CIF (Div. IAA section) finals and that will take a super effort from the whole team," Hargreaves told CalHiSports.com.

"We have such a balance up front on this team. It's really nice having an equal team," Kylie said. "We have no idea who's getting the kill. Our setter sets everyone."

That setter would be senior Hamill, who next fall will be setting at Point Loma Nazarene University where she has earned a scholarship.

Another girl who provides size and power at the net is 6-foot-2 senior middle blocker Crouse, who is headed to Loyola-Marymount. "Kenna's awesome," said Hargreaves.

Senior outside hitter, 5-10 Ellie Wiekamp, is also headed for college volleyball. She'll study and play at UC San Diego.

Rounding out the D1 college players for the Eagles is senior libero Brenna Cygan. She is going up the road to Cal State Fullerton next fall.

As much as Kylie talked about her team she was just as talkative about family. Her previously mentioned father Guy, who owns a flooring company, grew up in Lake Arrowhead and played football at Boise State.

Her biggest fan, her mother Laurie, works in child-care at UC Irvine.

Little sister, 11-year-old Delanie, who likes cheerleading and volleyball, is a fan too, although according to big sis she hesitates to admit it. "We're five years apart, so she has her own stuff," Kylie said. "She'll never tell me but my parents say she really looks up to me."

And why shouldn't she look up to her older sister? Hargreaves is carrying a B-plus average at academically challenging Santa Margarita Catholic, and although only a junior, she's being looked at seriously by several major D1 schools.

"I've narrowed it down to around five schools," said Kylie, who tells CalHiSports.com that besides enjoying writing and an interest in journalism, she likes film aesthetics and enjoys learning about what goes on backstage. "Backstage stuff is fun," she said.

The five schools she's narrowed it down to are Colorado State, University of Colorado, her dad's alma mater Boise State, Rice and Texas Christian University.

Before college and her senior season there is Thursday's match with Royal and a possible showdown for the IAA title with top-seeded Mira Costa if Kylie and her teammates can get to the final.

Coach Chapman-Uhrig won't be keeping the stats but if the Eagles are in the finals Nov. 22 at Cypress College, we'll know that Kylie Hargreaves will one of the major reasons.

CA, Santa Margarita, Kylie Hargreaves

ESPN RISE FAB 50 girls volleyball

November 12, 2008 8:00 PM

By Christine Jinbo

California:
The race in California has just begun as many other states moved on to their winter seasons. CIF Southern Section released its brackets in ten divisions on Sunday and ESPN RISE FAB 50 No. 7 Mira Costa (Manhattan Beach) received the top seed in Div. I-A.  No. 11 Wilson (Long Beach), No. 15 Santa Margarita, and No. 22 Los Alamitos followed behind in the No. 2, 3 and 4 spots.  The top four seeds of Div. I-A all went undefeated in their leagues with the exception of Santa Margarita, which split with No. 29 Orange Lutheran.

 Falyn Fonoimoana
 Leonard Xu/ESPN RISE
Can Falyn Fonoimoana take Costa to another CIF Title?
No. 19 Dos Pueblos (Goleta) swept the Channel League over rival Santa Barbara and received the top seed in Div. I-AA.  No. 39 Marymount (Los Angeles) and previously ranked No. 46 Santa Barbara will battle it out in the bottom half of the bracket.  No. 26 Redlands East Valley (Redlands) received the first seed in Div. II-AA
There were no surprises in the CIF Sections of San Diego or Central Coast.  No. 2 La Costa Canyon (Carlsbad) received the first seed in Div. I with Avocado League rival No. 43 Torrey Pines in the second seed.   The Central Coast Section seeded Archbishop Mitty first in Div. II.  The mighty Monarchs will not have much to overcome until state playoffs.

Colorado:
No. 20 Cherry Creek (Greenwood Village, Colo.) picked up its fifth state championship in school history and its first in ten years. Coach Sally Moos' squad proved their dominance and defeated Grandview (Aurora) for the third time this year, 28-26, 25-11, 25-11, to win the Colorado 5A State final.

"It's been ten years since we last won state. Moos continued, "we are a senior laden team and these ten seniors have been looking forward to this season for a long time.

Moos elaborated, "They (the ten seniors) have played a huge role in the development of the team all season, which I think is why we have been successful,

The Colorado 5A All-Tournament Team selected three Cherry Creek players: setter- Gabi Dewberry, outside hitter- Carrie Baird and middle- Sam Peters.  Baird, a 6-foot-1 senior was chosen as the 5A state tournament MVP and paced the final match over Grandview with 15 kills.

Florida:
In the Sunshine State, the race is between three schools, which will not play each other. In the Florida High School Athletic Association State Championship, No. 37 Timber Creek (Orlando) could finish first in Div. 6A, No. 41 Plant (Tampa) first in 5A, and No. 40 Berkeley Prep (Tampa) first in 3A.  As it stands this season, Berkeley Prep defeated Plant and Timber Creek defeated Berkeley Prep.

Illinois:
The state race in the Land of Lincoln is down to the final four teams in each division.  In Class 4A, No. 16 Benet Academy (Lisle) will face No. 6 Mother McAuley (Chicago), which is on a twenty match win streak since its loss to No. 5 St. James (Lenexa, Kan.) at the NIKE Challenge in Chicago.

Benet's last loss was to No. 12 Joliet Catholic at the Glenbard East Tournament and it advanced past No. 42 Naperville Central in the Sectionals. After Joliet Catholic's regular season schedule, the final four of Class 3A should pose not threats.

No. 9 St. Charles East will face unranked Evanston Township before it will get the chance to confront either Benet or McAuley in the finals.

Indiana:
The Hoosier State since moved on to basketball season, but not before previously ranked No. 18 Indianapolis Cathedral came from behind in more ways than one.  Cathedral dropped the first set in the semifinals, but bounced back and took care of Elkhart Memorial, 24-26, 25-20, 25-20, 25-18.  The Fighting Irish then dispatched Central in four sets, 21-25, 25-18, 25-17, 25-20 for the Class 4A Indiana State crown.

The Class 3A and 2A State Championships went forward without a glitch as No. 47 Delta defeated Mishawaka Marian in the Class 3A final, 25-21, 25-18, 25-19 and Muncie Burris tapped Brownstown Central in the Class 2A final 25-16, 25-15, 25-20.

Kansas:
The Sunflower State was in full bloom as No. 5 St. James Academy (Lenexa) cruised to the Class 4A Kansas State title over Topeka-Hayden, 25-15, 25-12.  Coach Nancy Dorsey shaped this brand new program into a state and national contender in four short years.

The All Tournament Team from Class 6A, chosen by the Kansas Volleyball Association, selected: Alexa Bordewick, Kelsey Lewis, Shannon Majors and Kacia Turner from Washburn Rural.  Lauren Brown, Hanna Forst, Rachel Gray, Brook Jansen, Kelly Kolich, and Nia Williams were selected from St. James.

Kentucky:
No. 3 Mercy (Louisville) finished atop the Bluegrass State and went five for five over No. 18 Sacred Heart (Louisville), with the final win in the state finals, 25-20, 25-23.  The Jaguars most difficult test this season came from No. 32 Assumption, which was ranked as high as No. 6 after the Durango Classic (Las Vegas, Nev.), and the Jags came out on top three of four times.  Wins in Florida over No. 40 Berkley Prep (Tampa) and No. 41 Plant (Tampa) also proved the dominance of Mercy.

Kentucky State Championship All-Tournament Team:
Alex Schulte (Newport Central Catholic), Kaela Freppon (Newport Central Catholic), Jaimie Wulfeck (Notre Dame), Jenna Schreiver (Notre Dame), Connie Strong (Owensboro Catholic), Brooke Dowlen (Logan County), Kelly Cole (Paul Dunbar), Maddie Hatcher (Paul Dunbar), Danica Fick (Paul Dunbar), Abbi Williams (Sacred Heart), Emily Juhl (Sacred Heart), Lexi Bauer (Sacred Heart), Madison Hardy (Mercy), Kelsey Anderson (Mercy), Paige Wessel (Mercy)

Most Valuable Player:    Casey Garvey (Mercy)

Minnesota:
No. 38 Shakopee defeated first-time state qualifiers No. 46 Eastview (Apple Valley), 26-24, 19-25, 25-22, 25-22 in the Class AAA Minnesota State Championship match.  The Sabors defeated Mayo (Rochester) 25-16, 25-5, 25-17, in the quarterfinals and Andover 27-25, 25-22, 25-13 in the semifinals.

Previously ranked No. 44 St. Michael-Albertville fell in the semifinals Eastview but bounced back and outlasted Andover, 25-14, 24-26, 25-23, 25-21.

Ohio:
In the Division I Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) Volleyball State Championship at Wright State University, it was the battle of the unbeaten teams.  Previously ranked No. 20 Olmsted Falls defeated No. 13 Cincinnati Ursuline Academy, 39-37, 16-25, 25-21, 25-12 and finished the season as the only undefeated team in all four divisions with a record of 29-0.

The 39-37 first game score was the highest in a state tournament championship match since Ohio went to the rally scoring format in 2004.  The previous high was 28-26, set on three different occasions.

Texas:
The Lone Star State shaped up to be just as exciting as expected.  Previously ranked No. 4 Reagan (San Antonio) eliminated District 26 rival No. 6 O'Connor (San Antonio) from the Texas State race.  The Rattlers will not have to worry about fellow San Antonio team previously ranked No. 11 Churchill, as the Chargers fell to previously unranked Austin Westlake.

No. 14 Amarillo advanced to Regional semifinals over Arlington Martin.  The Sandies could face No. 21 Clear Creek (Houston) in the final four of the State Qualifier Tournament.

Ten seniors

November 11, 2008 9:18 PM

By Christine Jinbo

For students at Cherry Creek High School, excellence is not "a way of life," it is life.  The perfect 31-0 Cherry Creek volleyball team is no exception.  Cherry Creek is a school where 125 championships banners have been raised and 95 percent of the graduates from the National Blue Ribbon School attend college.

Cherry Creek, like many schools, began as a one-room schoolhouse, which evolved into much more.

Gabi Dewberry is all over the court.
Cherry Creek High School opened in 1955 with 364 students.  It now opens its doors each day to 3,727 students and 348 faculty and staff, more faculty and staff than students in 1955.

Like the growth of the school, the Bruins' volleyball program has matured and grown.  Although the Bruins own five state championships, this year's team accomplished a first. It is the first Cherry Creek team to finish the season undefeated with a Colorado 5A State Title.  Head Coach Sally Moos has coached at Cherry Creek for twenty-five years with a 491-161 overall record.  The Bruins proved their dominance and defeated Grandview for the third time this year, 28-26, 25-11, 25-11, in the state finals.

"It's been ten years since we last won state," said Moos.  "The kids are the same, but club play has really helped the skill level.  They are exposed to the sport at a much younger age.  Their strength, speed and agility as well as their skills are much better, much sooner."

This year, the Bruins ran the table in the Centennial League and swept Grandview (Aurora), one of the top teams in Colorado.  The Bruins carried their Region with a five set scare over Eaglecrest (Centennial), and went on to the Colorado 5A State Tournament.

Rampart (Colorado Springs) pushed Cherry Creek in the state semifinal match and handed the Bruins their first loss of a set in the tournament. The Bruins quickly bounced back in the fourth set to win 25-20, 25-12, 21-25, 25-17.  The talented team, led by ten seniors, helped make the undefeated season a reality.

"The ten seniors have been looking forward to this season for a long time," said Moos.

"We have some very talented players who have worked really hard as a team and played for each other this season.  They (the ten seniors) have played a huge role in the development of the team all season, which I think is why we have been successful," she continued.  "It was those ten who got the job done for us all year long."

Peters chipped in eight kills, five blocks, and three aces while Dewberry carried the setting load and contributed six kills.

"If I had to choose an 'inspirational player,' it would be Gabi Dewberry," said Moos.

"(Dewberry) is a very competitive person.  She is all over the court, going for every ball and does not let any ball hit the court on our side of the net," Moos added.

Dewberry committed to play at Cal State Fullerton and Peters to Santa Clara University.  Baird continues to be pursued by multiple schools, but as of yet, is unsigned.

Although participation in club sports has increased the level of play in high school, they are two separate beasts, yet inseparably linked.  Club volleyball lasts approximately six months and begins after the four-month high school season.  The differences between the two have enthusiasts across the nation comparing the two.  What club has is different from what high schools have.  Clubs draws the best athletes from surrounding areas and forms an elite level team, which participates in regional and travel tournaments.  High schools draw from their own school communities and therefore have a nostalgic bond with generations past.

"Playing for your high school is huge, said Moos,  "the memories of playing with their school friends, in front of the school, their family and fans will always be a part of their high school experience."

"These memories are unlike club," Moos paused.  "This is community."

With ten seniors on this team, Moos will have her work cut out for her next year.

ESPN RISE National Athlete of the Week

The ESPN RISE high school athletes of the week program honors five football players and ten non-football players each week for the fall season.  A panel of contributors from around the nation selects the honorees each week.

Our girls national honoree for this week comes from a family where volleyball is a way of life. Casey Garvey of ESPN RISE No. 3 Mercy, was named MVP of the Kentucky state tournament after recording a match-high 27 assists as the nationally-ranked Jaguars (40-1) beat city rival No. 17 Sacred Heart 27-25, 25-18 in the finals before a state tournament record 2,557 fans at Bellarmine University in Louisville.

The Jaguar's senior four-year letter-winner and three, and a half-year starter, was named Sixth Region Player of the Year and committed to Samford University.  Head Coach, and half brother, Todd Garvey was named the Coach of the Year for the Sixth Region. This family foray was "two against one as Casey and Todd battled brother Eric Garvey, head coach of Sacred Heart in the finals.

"It was a neat experience having us all involved in the State Championship game, said Coach (Todd) Garvey.

He elaborated on his finals victory, "It was the fifth time we beat Sacred Heart this year and after winning I kind of had mixed emotions. It was great to win but I felt bad for my brother.

Garvey continued, "He (Eric) does have a young team and will have a great shot next year though.

Mercy team won its fifth state title and first since 1990 and its only loss of the season came in a match to Louisville powerhouse Assumption, which was a team the Jaguars beat three times.

"It has been a blast to coach Casey the past couple of years. We are really close and it's been great to be able to spend time with her everyday, said Coach (Todd) Garvey.

"She is a great setter and very smart on the court, she's a coach on the floor for us, he added.

Mercy will finish no lower than No. 3 in the final ESPN RISE FAB 50 National Rankings. Finishing No. 1 will depend on how California teams La Costa Canyon of Carlsbad and Archbishop Mitty of San Jose fare in upcoming section and state playoffs.

Katherine Douglas Wildcat breaks 2000

November 8, 2008 9:00 AM

Her sister was a star before she was, but now that the "Big Kat has taken center stage, her Woodside team has won consecutive league titles and she's following in big sis's footsteps by playing volleyball in college.

By Harold Abend, Special to ESPNRISE.com

It was senior night Nov. 4 at the packed Woodside High gym, and the opponent was Peninsula Athletic League Bay Division rival Menlo-Atherton of Atherton.

Prior to the match, they had a ceremony similar to others at high school gymnasiums throughout the nation. While all the seniors were being honored, it was one girl in particular, who was saved for last in the order of introduction.

And finally, the announcer shouted, "With over 2,000 career kills, Katherine, the 'Big Kat' Douglas."

"Feed the Kat!" the crowd roared several times in response.

And just like they've done the past two seasons in particular, Kat's Wildcats' teammates took the court and did just that, feeding the 6-foot-1 Douglas a steady diet of solid sets that produced an easy 25-9, 25-14, 25-15 victory over the Bears. The match ended appropriately with the Big Kat using her rocket-launcher-like right arm to get a big smash kill.

For the match, Kat had 24 kills, eight digs, three ace serves, three sets, two blocks, went 13-of-13 receiving serves, and posted an amazing .857 hitting percentage.

Last week in a match against Carlmont (Belmont) that sealed the Wildcats' second straight PAL-Bay title, Kat was just as spectacular in a 3-0 victory.

For that match, Douglas had 22 kills, four aces and two blocks.

So far this season, Douglas has compiled 523 kills, 254 digs, 53 aces, and 32 blocks, a 404. hitting percentage, and the Wildcats, who haven't shied away from top competition, are 21-12 overall and finished 13-1 in league heading into next week's Central Coast Section playoffs.

The four-year starter now has "2,124 kills, and counting," according to proud Woodside Coach Greg Lara. She is also the PAL-Bay player of the year the past two seasons.

"Kat has the right mental makeup of a great athlete. She's focused, determined, and trains all the time," said Lara, a finan
